Humpybong Yacht Club sailors Matt Homan and Lucas McDonald won the Formula 18 Australian Championships hosted by Humpybong Yacht Club over the weekend of the 20th 21st 22nd of February 2009.
Matt and Lucas sailed well to take the title from former champions Richard and Stephen Brewin and also other 2004 champions and Humpybong Yacht Club members Nev Thompson and Shamus Stephens. Also on the podium was another Humpybong Yacht Club members Brad Collett in Chris Munro (alias Slate) finishing in third position. With boats from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and far North Queensland showing the outstanding talent Humpybong Yacht Club sailors have in the world of formula 18 racing. Matt and Lucas are the two year running Queensland State champions, so this adds to their list of achievements in the highest way. Humpybong Yacht Club was also represented with other members Warren Guinea and his crew and our junior sailors Shane and Louise Hatton who finished in a very creditable 23rd position. This is Shane and Louise's first experience in formula 18 Australian Championships and the determination was great and their competency high as they competed in open fleet racing.
The conditions were perfect on Friday, the first day of racing with breeze to about 12 knot keeping the fleet racing tight and sea conditions perfect. The completion of three races was made easy. The fourth race planned for the afternoon was postpone as there was a storm rapidly approaching from the South.
Saturday saw the Race Course taken further towards the airport on the southern side of Bramble Bay with only one race being completed in the morning. With conditions to about 5 knots a decision to postpone and return to the beach was made and a wait for the afternoon breeze to fill in. The boats returned to the water around 3 p.m. and two short races and one longer race was once again held in conditions to about 15 knots producing some fantastic racing.
With seven races completed and a 15 to 20 knot forecast for Sunday and only one point separating first and second place and one point separating second and third place the pressure was on. Matt & Lucas needed to sail 3 perfect races to take the title and to their credit that is exactly what they did with a second in the first race of the day and 2 first places in races 9 and 10. Finishing on 16 points, second-place finishing on 22 points and third place Brad Collett and Chris Munro on 23 points and Neville Thompson and Seamus Stephens finishing forth on 34 points, this and gave Matt and Luke the title of Australian Formula 18 Champions 2009.
